Summary

As the Manager of Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting, you will drive the development and implementation of accounting practices that ensure our organization maintains compliance with evolving financial reporting requirements. Reporting to the Controller or Director of Finance, you will bring technical expertise and strategic thinking to establish robust processes, maintain compliance with U.S. GAAP and Canadian reporting standards (where applicable), and support our growing SaaS business model with complex revenue recognition and subscription accounting.

What you'll do (roles & responsibilities)

  • Lead technical accounting research and policy development for complex transactions including SaaS revenue recognition (ASC 606), subscription accounting, usage-based billing, deferred revenue, multi-element arrangements, and contract modifications
  • Manage revenue recognition processes for subscription products, professional services, and usage-based pricing models, ensuring compliance with ASC 606 and proper revenue allocation
  • Prepare financial statements and disclosures for management reporting, board packages, investor relations, and audit requirements
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures for new product offerings, pricing models, and business arrangements
  • Support external audit processes by preparing audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and ensuring documentation is complete and audit-ready
  • Implement and maintain internal controls over financial reporting, including documenting controls, performing risk assessments, and supporting SOX compliance efforts
  • Analyze complex contracts and arrangements to determine proper accounting treatment, including licensing agreements, partnership arrangements, and enterprise customer contracts
  • Support quarterly and annual close processes with technical accounting reviews, journal entries, and financial statement preparation
  • Collaborate with Revenue Operations and Sales teams to review customer contracts and ensure proper revenue recognition treatment
  • Build scalable financial reporting processes and systems as the company grows, including implementing or optimizing ERP and reporting tools
  • Research and document accounting positions for complex or non-standard transactions, including equity compensation, business combinations, leases, and debt arrangements
  • Prepare technical accounting memos documenting conclusions and supporting rationale for significant accounting judgments
  • Support financial reporting for multiple entities across different jurisdictions (US, Canada, international) ensuring compliance with local requirements
  • Develop internal reporting frameworks to standardize processes and ensure accuracy and consistency across the organization
  • Collaborate with Finance, FP&A, Tax, and Legal teams to ensure alignment between financial results, KPIs, and external communications
  • Support strategic initiatives from an accounting perspective, including new product launches, M&A activity, financing transactions, and international expansion
  • Monitor changes in accounting standards (FASB, AICPA) and assess impact on the company's financial reporting
  • Mentor junior accounting staff and provide guidance on technical accounting matters
  • Support investor relations and board reporting with financial analysis and technical accounting insights

What you should have (Must-Haves)

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA certification (or Canadian CPA/CA equivalent)
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in technical accounting roles with increasing responsibility
  • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP with strong knowledge of ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition), ASC 842 (Leases), and other complex accounting standards
  • SaaS or subscription business experience with understanding of recurring revenue models, deferred revenue, and usage-based billing
  • Public accounting background (Big Four preferred) with experience serving technology or SaaS clients
  • Experience with external audits and preparing audit-ready documentation and schedules
  • Strong technical accounting skills including research, documentation, and application of complex accounting guidance
  • Understanding of internal controls and SOX compliance requirements
  • Experience with financial reporting systems and ERP platforms (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar)
  • Exceptional technical writing skills with ability to document complex accounting conclusions clearly and concisely
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate complex transactions and determine proper accounting treatment
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical accounting matters to non-accounting stakeholders
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Revenue Operations, Legal, FP&A, and business teams
  • Detail-oriented and organized with strong project management skills
  • Proven ability to operate in fast-paced environments and manage multiple priorities
  • Experience building processes and controls as companies scale

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with Canadian GAAP (ASPE or IFRS) for multi-jurisdictional reporting
  • Private company experience with investor reporting and board package preparation
  • Technology or SaaS industry expertise with understanding of software business models
  • Experience with complex revenue arrangements including multi-year contracts, professional services, and partner/reseller agreements
  • Knowledge of AI/ML business models and how to account for AI-powered product features
  • Experience with equity compensation accounting (ASC 718) including stock options, RSUs, and employee stock purchase plans
  • Familiarity with international accounting and multi-currency reporting
  • Experience supporting M&A transactions from an accounting due diligence and integration perspective
  • Knowledge of contract review and collaboration with Sales/Legal on non-standard deal structures
  • Experience with financial planning systems and integration with accounting platforms
  • Understanding of sales tax, VAT, and GST implications for financial reporting
  • Pre-IPO or high-growth company experience building scalable accounting processes
  • Experience with ASC 842 (lease accounting) implementation and ongoing compliance
  • Knowledge of business combinations (ASC 805) and purchase price allocation
  • Familiarity with revenue automation tools (Zuora, Stripe Revenue Recognition, RevPro)
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French (asset for Canadian operations and Quebec clients)
  • Interest in AI tools for accounting and willingness to adopt technology to improve efficiency
